Whistler

You will find the Whistler ski resort at the foot of two mountains, named Whistler and Blackcomb, eighty or so miles from Vancouver on the west coast of Canada.  The resort area started as a skiing area for locals in the middle of the 1960s, and has expanded to include three distinct areas, Creekside, Whistler Village and the Upper Village at the base of Blackcomb Mountain.

Whistler has grown to become North America’s largest skiing area and attracts thousands of ski-seekers each year due to its unique combination of high, open bowls, woodland trails and Alpine-like scenery.

It’s an attractive village full of modern amenities that is purpose-built for skiers with a large and central car-free area.  It has an excellent range of restaurants and spirited après-ski opportunities.  The Creekside area of Whistler was one of the venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Due to its attractiveness, Whistler can become packed and over-burdened with skiers during peak periods with over-crowding leading to packed pistes and excessive queues at the lifts.  The closeness of the resort to the Pacific Ocean means some cloudy weather and the odd spell of rain.  Be wary too that the mountain-based restaurants can become equally crowded and that they don’t match the excellence of the ones you find at the bottom of the slopes.

Whistler’s main attribute is its charm, with each of the centres designed to remain traffic-free.  There is a mix of accommodation styles, from chalet-style apartments on the sides of the hills to a more multi-storey hotel feel in the village centres.  Please be aware, the Village Square is the place where people like to party, so you’ve no room to complain if you book your accommodation there and you’re kept awake until the early hours by the noise.

If you’ve a head for heights, you can take the Peak 2 Peak gondola that links Whistler Village, Upper Village and Creekside, making each peak easily accessible.  Each mountain-top is reachable by a maximum of three lifts.  For your refreshment needs, Whistler Village by far the most bars, restaurants and shops, whilst the newer and car-free Whistler Village North is linked by a pedestrian bridge to the main centre.  Both Upper Village and Creekside are smaller and quieter.

The alpine-like views from each peak will take your icy breath away, especially of the deep Fitzsimmons Creek valley from the Peak 2 Peak gondola.  You can even see the coast from the upper slopes.  The pistes are largely well-maintained, although some of the lower slopes can become slushy.

If you’re new to skiing, you can sign up for either a three-day or five-day course to suit most standards from complete beginner to intermediate.  You will be placed in a small group with the same instructor each day, meaning your own personal needs will not be overlooked.  Two day courses are available for those who wish to really up their experience and expertise.

If you are on a family vacation, you will find children have been thought about and are well-catered for.  The Blackcomb base area and the gondola mid-station both have excellent children-only areas, with the Children’s Adventure Park on Blackcomb, with its Magic Castle and Great Wall climbing centre, particularly appealing.

For snowboarders, skiers or just those who like snow, Whistler’s two peaks and three centres gives you everything you need for an Alpine-like experience in North America.  Book your skiing holiday now to see why Whistler has grown to become Canada’s most successful ski resort.

Vail

Vail is one of the largest ski resorts in the United States.  It stretches along the I-70 freeway that runs westwards from Denver, Colorado.  If Vail is not big enough for you, a lift-pass for the resort will also gain you access to nearby Beaver Creek, Breckenridge and Keystone.  The noted Colorado ski resort of Copper Mountain is also within travelling distance.

With such a large resort, the range of options is immense, especially for intermediate skiers.  There are huge areas known as Back Bowls which are terrains free of trees, something of a rarity when it comes to ski resorts in the United States.  The Blue Sky Basin is another worthy area, being wooden slopes that are largely kept ungroomed.  Take note though, both the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin may not be open in the early parts of the season, and can even be closed if the weather is warm.

Being so large, Vail can be tiring when travelling from one part to another, and there always seems to be some re-development going on.  Whilst the main resort centres are mainly traffic-free and have excellent amenities the mountain facilities are not that exceptional.  Also, Vail’s popularity can see the resort become over-crowded at peak times to the point where waiting for the lifts can be like queuing for rides at Disneyland.

Vail Village was purposely designed in the 1950s to replicate the feel of the Tirol, the ski-centre of the Alps, being created from chalets and German-style bierkellers.

However, the march of time and development means the village is just one small part of the sprawling resort, albeit in a smart and contemporary style.

The area covered by the resort is shrunk by the free and well-run bus service which links each centre.  Most of the more convenient accommodation is found in Vail Village.  Here too you have easy access to the Vista Bahn fast chair (which is soon to be reduced by a gondola) to get you up the mountain.  There are further options for accommodation all along the I-70,  The rule seems to be that the further away you get from Vail Village, the cheaper accommodation becomes.

The main mountain is like most snow-covered mountains in the United States – heavily wooden.  If you don’t like weaving through the trees, travel over the ridge to the bowls which are both wide and open.  This lack of cover does mean the conditions deteriorate during long spells of sunny weather, so it’s usually best to head to Vail at the chilliest times.

If you’re on holiday to improve your skills, you’ll hear nothing but glowing reports about the ski schools that are available.

You’ll be guaranteed a small group, meaning individual attention is a given.  The transition from intermediate to expert is especially catered for.

Children are also well-catered for.  The chief centre for children is at Golden Peak and is for children between the ages of four and fourteen.  You also fine kid-themed areas all about the resort with themed zones and trails.  Pay special attention to the Magic Forest and Chaos Canyon, plus the snowmobiles and trampolines at Adventure Ridge.

Vail has grown from a tiny, Alpine-like village purposely-built in the 1950s to a huge, sprawling and fun-packed resort.  Book a ski-holiday to Vail today to experience a full ski-centre experience with many unique features not found at other US resorts.

Killington

Almost three-quarters of a million people visit the popular resort of Killington each year for a skiing holiday.  This resort is the biggest ski resort east of the Mississippi River and is known as the Beast of the East.

This resort has seen many improvements over recent years, no less than the new Skye Peak Express, a lift that call take you from the bottom of the mountain to the top in around five minutes.

The ski trails have also been re-configured and re-thought, meaning less congestion, especially at the intermediate trails.  Another recent addition is the Stash, a freestyle riding experience designed by Jake Burton Carpenter, the founder of Burton Snowboards.  It’s an all-natural trail that’s half a mile in length and features wooded glades, and an enjoyable assortment of banks, slides and lines.

Killington is one of the most popular resorts in the States, and even with nearly two hundred trails can get very crowded, especially at weekends, resulting in long lift lines and congestion on the trails.  However, there’s no place in the East that can match Killington’s variety and range of options.  The owners work hard to keep the place in excellent shape, and there are several base lodges, numerous parking lots and thirty lifts to get you to the trail that takes your interest.

The ski-season at Killington runs from mid-November until mid-April.  For those who like an early-morning start, head for the Bunny Buster or the Rams Heads area.  You can get a clear run at these trails if you arrive early enough, before they get crowded.

Later in the day head for the Bear Mountain, where it is warmer and less crowded.  The trails there are not for the inexperienced though.  If you’re an accomplished skier, take your turn on the Wild Fire or – if you want to show off your expertise – the Outer Limits which is the longest and steepest run in the East.

If you’ve children, Killington can be the ideal place to introduce them to skiing.  You can find training courses and complete holiday packages for children as young as two, although the more serious stuff is meant for four years old and up.  Make certain you phone the resort and book your lessons beforehand.

Once you’re done slipping and shimmying down the mountain, there’s plenty to occupy you in town.  The three-mile access road from Route 4 to the mountain is full of restaurants, hotels and shops.  The place buzzes as soon as the sun comes up and rocks well after the sun has gone down.  This road was once a place for beer, pizza and any rough spot to lay your tired head.  Now it has sushi bars, designer shops and some top-notch accommodation options.  You’re bound to find a place to stay and places to eat that will easily fit your desires and your budget.

Killington really deserves and earns its place as one of the most-loved ski-resorts in the United States.  Book your ski-holiday to Killington today to discover why for yourself.

Val Thorens

Val Thorens Ski Resort is located in the Tarentaise Valley of Savoie in the French Alpes. It is the highest ski resort in Europe and one of the largest as it forms part of the Three Valleés.

Val Thorens used to be a small mountain village until the 1960’s.  It was then renovated and restructured to become a ski resort.  The resort has a large volume and density of snow because of the 2300-metre altitude.  This creates a perfect skiing season for the resort and it stays open from middle November to early May.  The slopes face in a northern direction, enhancing the sustainability of the snow.  The resort, however, faces south so tourists can enjoy sitting outside in the sun after skiing.

Skiing in Val Thorens

Skiing is with no doubt the main attraction in Val Thorens.  The resort forms part of the Three Valleys, along with the Glacier de Péclet and La Vanoise.

The ski enthusiast will be delighted to hear that there are 68 marked runs, called a piste. It is a ski run down a mountain on compacted snow.  There are also five terrain parks giving access to boarder cross tracks for snowboarders, quarter pipes and jumps.

Other activities in Val Thorens

It may happen that you perhaps do not know how to ski, in which case you may prefer to engage in some other activities.  Firstly, you need to be aware that there are many ski schools where qualified instructors will teach you all the basic on how to ski.

Either way, if you can or cannot ski, Val Thorens has many other activities to make your holiday enjoyable.  Glacier walking is very popular through the three valleys area.  Join an organised walking tour with trained and experienced guides to view the scenery and crevasses.

Book a helicopter tour to view the panorama of the valleys.Be more adventurous, go over the border to Switzerland for a drop off, and pick up heli-skiing ride.  It is not permitted in France, but worth the experience to cross the border to Switzerland where it is permitted.  Alternatively, go paragliding in tandem with an instructor over the slopes. Enjoy the ride and enjoy the view.

Go for a ride on a sled pulled by huskies.  You can either drive your own sled, or enjoy a more relaxing ride through the woods with a guide operating the sled.

For the shopaholics there is a large variety of stores in Val Thorens offering merchandise for the more active tourist.  You will find a selection of sport equipment and fashion labels.

On days where outdoor activities may be difficult or limited, enjoy the day with your family in the bowling arcade.  Here you can participate in ten-pin bowling, play pool on the pool tables or enjoy the various arcade type games similar to 겜블시티 가입 방법.

At the end of an active day, indulge your tired muscles in one of the many health spas in Val Thorens.  Relax in a Jacuzzi or be treated with a massage.  The choice is yours.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Val Thorens ranges from apartments and chalets, to studios and hotels.  Accommodation is built in such a way that it gives easy access to the skiing slopes and is located at the bottom of the slopes to provide easy access back to your accommodation.

The accommodation ranges from four-star hotels to accommodation that is more basic.  The tariffs will be accordingly.  A Club Med Hotel is available and has a great sunny terrace to enjoy relaxing times on your vacation.

Conclusion

Val Thorens is not only a winter destination.  The summer brings its own wonders, scenery and activities.  To appreciate Val Thorens for its full worth, it is still the best vacation option for a winter break away.

I thought we'd just let you know what a wonderful time we all had aboard the Adventure of the Seas, and thank you for your part in the arrangements, we enjoyed every minute, no doubt probably our best cruise to date. Also I would say that disparaging remarks or criticism were totally unfounded, we gave all the staff, food, cabins, entertainment, weather and the ports of call, 10 out of 10, its a great ship, managed by a fine Master and very dedicated crew. We may have to give next year a miss to build up the bank balance, but we will come back to you for your expertise, as our Cruise Connoisseur.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for organising our trip to Verona last weekend. This was a very emotive trip for my wife & I, as it was our first trip to Italy since my wife's cancer diagnosis 2 years ago. Italy is without a doubt our favourite place on the planet and we were not sure if she would see it again. Thanks to you, she has regained, what I call her Italian smile, it came across her face the minute we touched down. Money cannot pay for that smile! The hotel at Gatwick was literally a 2 minute bus ride from the airport, front row seats on the flight over and chauffeur driven limo to meet us at the airport was an amazing start to the weekend. When you said we were staying in a 3 star hotel, I was, if I'm honest, a little nervous, generally speaking, 3 star hotels in Italy means you are sleeping in a cow shed. Not at the Hotel Milano, what an amazing hotel, slap bang in the centre of Verona, with views of the arena, excellent breakfast, towels changed twice daily, good size bedrooms and very comfortable beds! The air con worked superbly, which was just as well with temperatures in the 30's every day. Thank you for making this trip memorable for both of us.

Not only were your clients located in in three corners of the UK, but you had to deal with very late booking alterations, various medical requirements, special dietary requirements and not to mention 6 very experienced cruisers. All arrangements were completed by you with professional calm and flourish and, due to your personal intervention and attention to detail, everything was perfect from beginning to end. It is a great location, very comfortable & very attentive staff. Venice was a trifle hot but lovely all the same and now competing for our favourite Italian city. All went well with the ship, again thank you for picking it for us; a perfect choice. Staff were great, cabin very comfortable and what was so nice is that there was no forced seating. We could eat in a choice of restaurants and there was always a table for two if we wanted it. The food choices were outstanding. The itinerary was very interesting particularly Kotor in Montenegro. We easily got a train into Florence and were bold over by Barcelona. A big thank you from us both for organising this trip, and believe it or not, we both came back a few pounds lighter!

The price through Jackie was cheaper than what we could of booked it ourselves. Lastly we have not been long back from Kardemeana in Kos, this one proved a bit more difficult to find as we'd been spoilt in Mexico, Jackie spent a lot of time finding us exactly what we asked for and yet again managed to find us a fantastic hotel at a brilliant price.
