Itinerary Details:-

Northbound

DAY 1 Bergen, Gateway to the Fjords

Bergen was founded in 1070 AD, and was the capital of Norway for several years. It has retained a great deal of local character and history. One example is the historic UNESCO-listed Bryggen district with colourful wharfs that date back to the 14th century. Take a stroll around this charming and compact city, spend some time in one of the outdoor cafés and restaurants, enjoy a trip on the Fløibanen Funicular or visit the Fish Market.

After embarkation it’s time for a tasty dinner buffet, based on the best ingredients from the coast. We sail north from Bergen along the Hjeltefjord, heading to the high north. Spend the rest of the evening relaxing as you take in the spectacular landscapes, either from deck or in our panorama lounges. There are several pre-voyage programmes available before departure.

DAY 2 Ålesund, Geirangerfjord/Hjørundfjord

Waking up early gives you chance to admire the breathtaking beauty of the Nordfjord. Sailing past the West Cape, we experience one of the few ventures into open sea during the voyage. Ålesund is a town renowned for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. Join the city walk to get a closer look.

In the summer months we set course for the spectacular UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. The optional excursion begins with a drive up Ørneveien with its magnificent views. Enjoy a picturesque ferry ride from the beautiful Eidsdalen Lake. Then we head for the stark, wild, high-alpine areas. One of the many highlights is the series of 11 hairpin bends down the winding Trollstigen Pass. The excursion ends with a dinner in Molde before embarking the Hurtigruten ship again.

In autumn we explore Hjørundfjord, situated in the majestic Sunnmøre Alps. The unspoiled natural landscape give this fjord its special character: We sail past steep rock walls, green meadows, lonely mountain farms and small villages far from the tourist bustle. Join the excursion ‘A taste of Norway’ for a different experience. First stop is Urke, where you can see local history in various forms. A bus tour through ‘Norway’s narrowest valley’ – Norangsdalen ends at historic Hotel Union Øye, that has housed many famous explorers, royalties and authors; Roald Amundsen, William Cecil Slingsby, Emperor Wilhelm II, Queen Maud, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Karen Blixen among others.

DAY 3 Trondheim, the Medieval Capital

Few large cities have managed to preserve their intimacy as effectively as Norway’s third largest city, Trondheim. The Viking King Olav Tryggvason founded the city in 997 AD. Be sure to enjoy the views from Gamle Bybrua (the Old Town Bridge) dating back to 1861 and the restored wooden buildings of the Bakkland district.

We offer tours of Norway’s national shrine, Nidaros Cathedral. This is Norway’s only Gothic style cathedral built over the burial place of St. Olav, Norway’s patron saint. Marvel at the cathedral’s incredible architectural details and exquisite works of art. On one of these excursions we continue to the Ringve Museum of Musical History, where the history of Norway’s music will be brought to life. This beautiful manor house is surrounded by a wonderful botanical garden, with fantastic views of both the city and the fjord.

In autumn you can join the trip out to Munkholmen. This was an execution place, before becoming a Benedictine monastery around 1000 AD. In 1658 it was made into a fortress and prison, and later a customs station. A boat trip on the beautiful Trondheim Fjord is an experience in itself. Enjoy the city from the sea, and visiting the fortress will take you thousands of years back in time.

The afternoon is spent sailing past the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse and numerous charming islets and rocky outcrops. After sailing through the narrow Stokksund, the ship arrives at charming Rørvik.

DAY 4 Arctic Circle and Lofoten Islands

If you are sailing in Arctic waters for the first time the captain will make sure that the occasion is a memorable event, when you participate in the Arctic Circle ceremony on deck.

The Arctic Circle marks the border to the Arctic region. In summer this means 24-hour daylight – often referred to as the ‘Midnight Sun’. In winter being above this degree of latitude gives you the best chance of experiencing the Northern Lights.

Near Ørnes you find Svartisen, Norway’s second largest glacier. Join us for a trip to the Svartisen Tourist Centre, where you can admire the beauty of this mysterious cap of ice. In Bodø you can enjoy an adventure in harmony with nature, eagles and the deep blue sea. We head to Saltstraumen in a RIB, where you will witness the world’s most powerful tidal current. On this exciting journey through the wild landscape, there is also a good chance to observe sea eagles.

The Lofoten Islands will charm you with its small, picturesque fishing villages and bohemian atmosphere. The nature is an experience out of the ordinary with majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches. Take a stroll between the stockfish racks and ‘rorbuer’, the traditional fisherman’s huts. Join an historical journey to the Lofotr Viking Museum in Stamsund on an overland trip between Stamsund and Svolvær. We are invited into the Chieftain’s house; a full size reconstruction featuring exhibits of finds dating back to the Viking age.

After sailing through the narrow Raftsund, the captain will show his skills while sailing into the Trollfjord and turn around before sailing out again.

DAY 5 Tromsø and Arctic Excitement

Get ready for a day full of exciting activities, whatever the season! After several intense hours on the open sea, we set our course to Senja, known as ‘Norway in Miniature’ and re-join the Hurtigruten ship at Finnsnes, just in time for lunch!

The ship continues to Tromsø for a prolonged stay. Many epic Arctic expeditions used Tromsø as a starting point. During winter and the polar night, the only lights you’ll see come from the headlamps, the starry sky, and if you’re lucky; the magical Northern Lights.

After an exhilarating day in Tromsø, we continue our northbound journey. Now we are in the area where you have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights between October and March, and we gather on deck to search for this spectacular phenomenon.

DAY 6 North Cape, Crossing the 71st Parallel

After brief early stops in Hammerfest and Havøysund we arrive in Honningsvåg, the gateway to the spectacular North Cape. The excursion to the North Cape Plateau puts you at 71°10’21”N, only 2,000km from the Geographical North Pole. Standing on top the 307m North Cape plateau gives you a sublime feeling of being at the end of the world. After all, you can’t get any further north in mainland Europe. The tour includes a visit to the North Cape Hall, where there is an impressive panoramic film about Finnmark and the North Cape. In summer, you might see herds of grazing reindeer and a small camps belonging to the indigenous Sámi people.

Close to the North Cape you find one of the world’s most exciting nature reserves, Gjesværstappan. During the nesting season this area is teeming with life as mighty sea eagles hover above in search of prey. Meanwhile guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas, northern fulmars, Brünnich’s guillemots, and the large northern gannet fill the air with a cacophony of shrieks and screeches. In the autumn you can also catch a glimpse of Europe’s smallest seabird, the British storm petrel.

Continuing north, we are sailing in the heartland of the indigenous Sámi people. We pass their ancient sacred site, the rock formation Finnkirka. The trip continues up to the Finnmark plateau, 300m above sea level, where you might also see reindeer in their natural habitat.

If you want some winter action we recommend the unforgettable snowmobile trip to one of Europe’s most extreme and exciting natural areas. Experience the snow-clad valleys, the fresh winter air and perhaps the mesmerizing Northern Lights in the clear, starry sky.

DAY 7 Kirkenes and the Arctic Wilderness

The vistas become more dramatic as we approach Kirkenes, just a few kilometres from the Russian border. We arrive in Vadsø early in the morning. This is one of the most attractive and popular bird-watching areas in the Arctic due to it being directly in the path of birds migrating from east to west. The advantageous biotopes combined with the rich resources in the adjacent Arctic Ocean attract myriad species and numbers of birds

Just after breakfast we arrive in Kirkenes, putting us at 30° East, further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. This is Hurtigruten’s turning point, known as the capital of the Barents region and the gateway to the east. The Russian border is close by, and all the road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian.

Kirkenes is home to the fantastic Snow Hotel, the base for several exciting excursions in wintertime. During spring you may still be able to participate in our winter activities and excursions. Explore the Arctic on a snowmobile, driving over a frozen fjord. On our husky sledge adventure the huskies eagerly take you through the arctic wilderness.

Southbound

DAY 7 Kirkenes, the Voyage South Begins

Leaving Kirkenes, you’ve only seen half of what the coast has to offer. Prepare yourself for many new experiences. The ports previously visited by night on the northbound journey are now seen by day. In the afternoon the ship docks in Vardø again, Norway’s easternmost port. If you feel like being a true Arctic hero, come with us and take a bath in Arctic Ocean during winter. We continue along the Varanger peninsula to Båtsfjord before reaching Berlevåg in the evening – the hometown of one of Norway’s most famous men’s choirs, consisting mostly of local fishermen.

DAY 8 North Cape, Lyngenfjord and Tromsø

In the middle of the night we dock at Mehamn, where it is possible to join an unforgettable snowmobile trip through one of Europe’s most extreme and exciting natural areas.

Hammerfest was Norway’s polar capital, acting as a base for hunting expeditions to the high Arctic. See the UNESCO-listed Meridian Column, erected in 1854 to commemorate the first precise measurement of the globe. Join the mountain hike in summer to explore the area even more. We continue south to Øksfjord. After crossing open water, we will make a brief stop at the old trading post of Skjervøy before sailing through the beautiful Lyngenfjord in spring. Surrounded by the snowy peaks of the Lyngen Alps. Here you might get a taste of freshly caught prawns on deck.

As we arrive in the charming city Tromsø, known as ‘the Paris of the North,’ you may choose to book a seat at the Midnight Concert at the Arctic Cathedral, or you could check out one of the town’s many friendly pubs.

DAY 9 A Full Day in Lofoten

The daylight sailing through the Lofoten Islands is a highlight for many of our guests. The region is renowned for its natural beauty with steep mountains, wild nature and small, picturesque fishing villages. This day also offers several exciting excursions that will make you feel like a natural born explorer.

Lofoten and Vesterålen offer some of the most stunning scenery you will see during your coastal voyage. Risøyhamn is a small village with only 200 inhabitants, and we make a short stop here to deliver passengers, groceries and mail. Then we continue via Sortland to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded more than 120 years ago.

Continuing south it looks like we are sailing straight into the mountain wall, but the captain finds an opening and sails through the narrow Raftsund. Now we reach the spectacular Trollfjord, only 2km long and 100m wide and surrounded by mountains. The captain might take a detour in here. The steep cliffs hug the ships side, and the dramatic landscape will take you to a land of trolls and fairy tales. Trollfjord is the realm of the sea eagle.

Onto Svolvær and continuing on to Stamsund, where the majestic peaks of the huge Lofoten wall can be viewed. We leave the islands during the evening and set course for the mainland.

DAY 10 Arctic Circle and Seven Sisters

Crossing the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N is an important ‘rite of passage’ today. We celebrate this with a taste of our Arctic traditions out on deck. Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. All seven mountains are between 900 and 1,100 m high, and it is easy to understand how these ‘ladies’ have influenced ancient myths. According to Norwegian folk tales, trolls are turned to stone if they do not hide before the sun rises. This was also the case for these seven beautiful sisters who, still beautiful, are now also mountains.

We take a short stop in Nesna, an idyllic old trading post before moving on to Sandnessjøen.

DAY 11 Trondheim and West Coast Cities

Today gives you another opportunity to explore the city of Trondheim.

Then back on board, the ship heads out of the majestic Trondheimsfjord, which is 170km long and up to 25km wide. Like all other Norwegian fjords it is deep, 577m at most.

Kristiansund’s location has provided the town with a wealth of opportunities in the fishing, shipbuilding and oil industries. This town is now regarded as Norway’s ‘cured cod capital’ because of its long time export of salted dry fish.

After a short sightseeing tour in Kristiansund we continue to Averøy and visit Kvernes Stave Church. As we cross the open sea to Molde, known as the ‘city of roses’, you will notice the steep, grey, pointed peaks of the Romsdal Alps

DAY 12 Bergen, the Last Chapter of the Ferry Tale

Before we dock in Bergen there are still a few nautical miles of fascinating scenery ahead of us, such as the picturesque Nordfjord below the enormous Jostedals glacier. The fjord widens to the east and forges 90km inland to Loen and Olden. The rugged coastal areas are a striking contrast to the inner fjord areas where the wind is less fierce and there is less rain. Fertile fruit gardens and the fingers of glaciers stretch out towards glistening lakes and gushing rapids. Both types of landscape have their own distinctive charm and tourists are well advised to experience both.

After a morning call at Florø, we navigate the inlet of the mighty Sognefjord. You also get the best views of the archipelago en route. And finally you disembark in Bergen, taking with you memories of a unique journey filled with impressions, experiences and meetings with the locals, wildlife and the stunning nature.

The National Parks Tour of Arizona and Utah

The breathtaking landscapes of Arizona and Utah, Wyoming and South Dakota present visions of the American West.

The National Parks Tour Itinerary

Day 1 London – Denver

Titan’s VIP Home Departure Service® collects you from home, for your journey to London Heathrow Airport for a direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Denver. On arrival, we transfer to our hotel, the Crowne Plaza Denver or Holiday Inn Cherry Creek for the next two nights.

Day 2 Denver

Modern and vibrant, set against a stunning Rocky Mountain backdrop, Denver makes a fine introduction to the American West. A brief orientation tour includes a visit to the gold-domed State Capitol building, one of the steps of which is exactly a mile above sea level, earning Denver its ‘Mile High City’ moniker. The remainder of the day is at leisure for relaxation or independent exploration – perhaps to learn more about Denver’s gold rush heritage at Larimer Square and the Historic Lower Downtown District, or wander around the excellent shops of the 16th Street Mall.

Day 3 Rocky Mountain National Park – Cheyenne

North of Denver, the summer resort of Estes Park is the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, with its towering, snow-streaked peaks reflected in still blue alpine lakes. After some time to appreciate the magnificent scenery, we continue to Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, named for the Native American people who occupied this region in times past. Our hotel is the Little America.

Day 4 Fort Laramie – Rapid City

Today we visit the historical Fort Laramie, a site of exceptional historical significance, a 19th century fur-trading station which was acquired by the US Army in 1849 to protect and supply western emigrants. It took on an increasingly important role in settling violent disputes between whites (often gold prospectors) and Native Americans, giving its name to two treaties, in 1851 and 1868. Following a visit, we leave Wyoming for South Dakota and Rapid City, the historic freight centre of the gold rush attractively situated at the foot of the Black Hills. Our base for two nights in Rapid City is the Adoba Eco Hotel.

Day 5 Crazy Horse – Mount Rushmore

This morning we pay a visit to a work in progress since 1948, the Crazy Horse Memorial situated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The monument is on a scale exceeding even that of the great pyramid, carved into a mountain and considered to be on sacred ground. This depiction of Sioux leader Crazy Horse, with arm outstretched illustrating the phrase ‘My lands are where my dead lie buried’, a tribute to the Native American. This evening we visit one of the world’s most impressive artistic achievements and an icon of the American West. Carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore, the 18m-tall faces of former presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln look serenely on. The monument itself is memorably featured in the climatic chase scene of Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest.

Day 6 Devils Tower – Sheridan

Our journey continues into Wyoming and Devils Tower, a bizarre igneous rock formation that protrudes dramatically out of the prairies that surround the Black Hills. It is perhaps just as famous as the site of the landing spaceship in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Then, we travel to Sheridan, a pleasant town which owes its prominence to a history of trapping, ranching, mining and railroad building offering modern hospitality with old west charm. Our hotel is the Holiday Inn or Best Western, Sheridan.

Day 7 Cody – West Yellowstone

We continue westward to the town of Cody, named after William F Cody, better known as the pioneering ‘wild west’ showman Buffalo Bill. After lunch at leisure and time for independent exploration of the collection of museums depicting features of the American West, we journey to Yellowstone National Park and to our hotel for the next two nights, the Gray Wolf Inn, perfectly located for exploring this remarkable region.

Day 8 Yellowstone National Park

Enjoy a full day tour of the unforgettable Yellowstone National Park. This high plateau straddles the border of three states and is packed with natural wonders – half of the world’s geothermal features (including the iconic ‘Old Faithful’ geyser) may be found here, along with hundreds of documented species of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. In the company of an expert local guide we can appreciate the enchanting mountains and waterfalls, marvel at the volcanic ‘sideshows’ and try to shoot the perfect picture of the park’s ‘megafauna’ – characterful wildlife including grizzly bears, wolves and herds of bison.

Day 9 Grand Teton National Park – Jackson Hole

Another memorable day of sightseeing awaits today, as we travel south through Grand Teton National Park, a 1,300km reserve renowned for the tranquil majesty of the snow-capped Teton Range, rising abruptly without foothills. The valley town of Jackson Hole offers a friendly welcome and a comfortable stay at the 49er Inn for the night.

Day 10 Salt Lake City

Today we travel south, crossing the state line between Wyoming and Utah as we journey to Salt Lake City, perhaps best known as the headquarters of the Mormon Church. Mormon pioneers, fleeing persecution in Illinois, settled here more than 150 years ago and helped build an attractive city with much to offer the modern-day traveller. On arrival, we take a short orientation tour before checking in at the Red Lion Salt Lake City.

Day 11 Arches National Park – Moab

Sit back and enjoy the scenery as we follow the mountains, passing beautiful canyons, on our way to Arches National Park. Aptly named and famed for its preservation of over 2,000 natural red sandstone arches spanning 73,000 acres of wilderness, including the beautiful Delicate Arch. We check in to the Aarchway Inn, Holiday Inn Express or Best Western Canyonlands, Moab, a short distance away for the night.

Day 12 Canyonlands National Park – Bryce Canyon National Park

Visits to two remarkable national parks comprise a long but rewarding day. As its name suggests, Canyonlands National Park presents a richly coloured landscape of canyons, mesas and buttes, carved by the Green and Colorado rivers and adorned with petroglyphs by the Ancestral Puebloan Indians. This afternoon we journey west, arriving at Bryce Canyon National Park, named for just one of many canyons which form a series of magnificent horseshoe-shaped natural amphitheatres on the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau. Erosion has created thousands of subtly and beautifully coloured limestone spires, fins, arches and mazes. Our hotel is the Best Western Ruby’s Inn.

Day 13 Bryce Canyon National Park – Zion National Park – Lake Powell

Today we visit Zion National Park, another park renowned for its soaring monoliths and echoing canyons, its enchanting waterfalls and rock colours, and its prolific wildlife and Native American heritage. We spend some time in contemplation of its quiet grandeur and natural marvels including the ‘hanging gardens’ (rock walls bedecked in summer months with flowers) before driving on to the Lake Powell Resort, our hotel in Lake Powell for tonight.

Day 14 Grand Canyon

Crossing into Arizona, our destination this afternoon is an undoubted wonder of the natural world. The Grand Canyon, a colossal, steep-sided gorge carved by the Colorado River, now a tiny silver ribbon a mile below, truly inspires with panoramic views of outstanding beauty from the south rim. This afternoon those that have booked on an optional helicopter or fixed wing flight over the Grand Canyon will have the opportunity to view this extraordinary phenomenon from a different point of view. Overnight at the Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams.

Day 15 Grand Canyon – Sedona – Scottsdale

This morning we depart south through Navajo country to Sedona, with its breathtaking red rock vistas, and on to Scottsdale via the ancient five-storey Native American cliff dwelling known as Montezuma Castle. At the heart of the ‘Valley of the Sun’ and the Sonoran Desert, noted for its spectacular sunsets and indigo skies, towering cacti and dramatic rock formations, the city of Scottsdale could hardly be more memorably situated. There is time to discover its thriving artistic and cultural community, exploring the shops and galleries from our centrally-located hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn.

Day 16 Scottsdale – Phoenix – In flight

A truly wonderful journey concludes at Phoenix Airport, for a direct, scheduled overnight British Airways flight to London.

Day 17 London

On arrival at London Heathrow you will be met and guided to your Titan vehicle, for the journey home.

China

For many, travel to China is the fulfillment of a dream. To explore the Forbidden City, home to Chinese emperors over the centuries, to gaze in awe at an entire army of Terracotta Warriors and to walk proudly on a Great Wall that stretches for over 4,000 miles. And yet these famous sights are only the first steps in discovering this fascinating land. A land of beauty with its poetic landscapes around Guilin, dramatic gorges along the Yangtze and striking mountain scenery in Nine Villages Valley.

For the more adventurous, there is the opportunity to travel along the ancient Silk Road or venture overland into mystical Tibet. Not forgetting everyone’s favourite, of course, the Panda’s!! Yet beyond these great wonders, the most enduring memory is often the charm of the Chinese themselves.

Spectacular Day Trip To Lapland

A spectacular one day tour to mystical Lapland, set in an exclusive location. Enjoy snowmobiling, husky & reindeer sleigh rides, a visit to a snow castle and a private family meeting with Santa. A never to be forgotten day

It’s an early departure from your chosen regional airport and breakfast will be served during your flight. On arrival in Enontekio we’ll provide you with an all in one snow suit & boots to keep you warm during the day. Then it’s time to head to our idyllic location beside a frozen lake shore by snowmobile & sleigh. Once at the venue you can relax & enjoy the magic of this amazing Winter Wonderland. Participate in husky & reindeer sleigh rides & learn to drive a snowmobile (suitable for both adults & children alike). Of course, children always love to do some tobogganing & at this location we have special Stiga toboggans, which allow greater steering ability to enhance their enjoyment. A visit to the snow castle is a must & in a specially constructed antechamber you will find traditional ice sculptures and tables made from ice where hot berry juice will be served. But when will we find Santa Claus? Well, a snowmobile & sleigh will be waiting to transport you to his home in the forest. Father Christmas knows you have travelled far to see him today & he has set aside time to see everyone. He especially enjoys reading children’s personally delivered letters & each child will receive a present from him. Lunch will be available throughout the day and a sample menu generally includes soup, baked potatoes with either a meat or vegetarian filling, pasta & a sweet dessert of pancakes & jam. Finally, after a fun-filled day it’s time to return to Enontekio leaving Santa & his helpers to continue their important duties. At the airport there will be an opportunity to purchase a memento of your visit to Lapland. Dinner will be served during your return flight home..

Lapland 3 Day Tour

Capture the true spirit of Christmas at the scenic resort of Luosto, the perfect setting for your amazing Lapland holiday. While a shorter and perhaps more condensed break, this tour provides the perfect opportunity to experience the same magical ingredients as those of a longer duration. Enjoy reindeer & husky sleigh rides and exciting trips by snowmobile through beautiful snow-covered forests and plains as we seek the great man. Where shall we find him? Will the scouts and elves be there to guide us? Of course they will and even though Santa has been a very busy man, supervising the dispatch of toys in time for Christmas Day; he will be thrilled to meet all the children who have made this very special journey to see him and to present them with a gift in person.

Set on the edge of the National Park, which is renowned for its natural beauty, the magnificent ski resort of Luosto provides the dramatic backdrop for your holiday to Lapland. Situated above the Arctic Circle; just 90 minutes from north of Rovaniemi, it is hard to imagine anywhere more beautiful or unspoilt than Finnish Lapland. And it is here where we can see why Santa has chosen Lapland as his homeland… a magical place, surrounded by lush pine, spruce and larch forests.

Japan Endless Discovery

Japan is a country which has so much to offer, it is steeped in history, tradition and has some amazing landscapes and a fascinating culture.

It is no surprise then that it is fast becoming an increasingly popular holiday destination.

Well known for the Samurai, Sumo Wrestling, Geisha’s, the Cartoon Culture, Tea Ceremonies, Sushi, Bonsai Trees, Mount Fiji, Cherry Blossom and the Bullet Train. It really is a must see destination.

There are numerous direct and indirect flights from the UK to Japan, which takes approximately 11 hours 30 minutes.  UK citizens are exempt from visa’s and are able to stay for up to 90 days.

Japan has a temperate climate and has four distinct seasons, Spring Summer, Autumn and Winter, they are the same months as the seasons in the UK.  As Japan stretches a great distance from north to south the climate is cooler in the north and in winter there is frequent snowfall in the Japanese Alps providing great snow for Skiing.  June and July see the monsoon rainfalls.

The most desirable time to travel is in the Spring and Autumn when the weather is mild and warm and the Cherry Blossom is in bloom from late March to mid-April and the splendour of the Autumn leaves in late October –November.

Travelling around Japan is made easy by it’s great public transport network in particular that of the train network, where trains are always on time!  The Japan Rail Pass is a definite must if you are planning on travelling around as it provides virtually unlimited travel on the entire Japanese Rail network (excludes the new super express Nozomi).

Accommodation is in both Japanese and Western Style and varies  from youth hostels, B&B’s, Ryokan’s (traditional Japanese Inn’s), hotels and even a chance to stay in temple’s. Offering accommodation for budget traveller’s right up to the luxury traveller.

There are 7 regions of Japan Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Kansai, Chubu, Chugoku and Shikoku and Kyushu and Okinawa.

Hokkaido – home to the unspoilt mountain scenery and abundant wildlife.  It is a nature-lover’s paradise.  It’s cool summers bring spectacular blooms of flowers while world class ski resorts mean it is also a great winter destination.

Tohoku – has a rustic charm, with a slower pace of life, rich natural beauty and countless hot spring resorts.

Kanto – home to Toyko is a region which boasts cultural attractions such as the ancient capital of Kamakura and the impressive temple Nikko set among beautiful scenery of lakes and waterfalls.

Kansai – the cultural heart of Japan is its ancient capital of Kyoto, with its many stunning temples and gardens.  By contrast, the city of Osaka offers a taste of vibrant modern Japan.

Chubu – the iconic site of Mount Fiji and the panoramic mountains of the Japan Alps provide well worn hiking trails in the warmer months and fantastic skiing in winter.  The Chubu region is also home to the picturesque towns of Kanazawa and Takayama.

Chugoku and Shikoku – the highlight of this region is the city of Hiroshima and the nearby island of Miyajima.  The inland sea separates this region from Shikoku, Japan’s fourth largest island.

Kyushu and Okinawa – the southern island of Kyushu offers lush greenery, hot springs and mysterious volcanic formations.  Highlights are Nagasaki and the volcano Mt. Aso. Further south, the tropical island chain of Okinawa boasts amazing coral reefs, white sandy beaches and a fascinating cultural heritage that is a mix between Japan and South-East Asia.

Japan is not as expensive as you think and, in fact, compares very favourably with London prices and has something for everyone, whether you are looking at a city break, tour, adventure, island getaway, family holiday, cruise, honeymoon, ski holiday etc.

So all that is left to do is book a trip and let the Japanese people Kangei (welcome) you.

Peaceful Kerala

For a first look at India, if you’re wary of too strong a culture shock, you can do no better than visit Kerala. It’s gentler, wealthier, and calmer than a lot of India and without a lot of the hassle.  A large area of this long, slim state is beside the sea so it offers the perfect holiday destination. The beaches aren’t quite the pale sandy splendour of its northerly neighbour, Goa, but Kerala offers variety and peacefulness. It also has an abundance of Ayurvedic resorts so forget the idea of a spa (which just means someone on site to provide massage and facials) – this is where to come for serious treatments and to go home completely rejuvenated.

Taking in a few places is easy here. If you begin in the pretty and historically interesting Fort Cochin, it’s only a 90 minute drive along relatively good roads down to Lake Vembanad which is stunning. This is where you can take a day (or two) on one of the famous houseboats along the backwaters. They even call you for at the private jetties of the more elegant lakeside hotels.

Inland there are spice plantations at Munnar and wildlife reserve at Periyar to visit. All these are within drives that are relatively short by Indian standards and of course full of interest.

Many of the sumptuous hotel resorts are in the south at Kovalam but closer to Cochin a place dear to my own heart is the Marari Beach. It’s only a 4* – but if it’s good enough for Paul McCartney it’s good enough for me – and you stay in detached thatched cottages amongst the most beautiful gardens, enjoy Ayurvedic massages and other treatments on site, and have free yoga and Pranayama sessions. Plus the food is truly fabulous.

Breathtaking India

India is a fascinating country and so much easier to travel in than it was even ten years ago.  At the same time it’s the toughest country, bar none, for which to plan an itinerary. Trains aren’t what we  imagine them to be, travelling distances in one area can be a joy while the same number of hours on the road elsewhere is a drag beyond description. Homestays and havelis that look gorgeous in photos, and for which reviews can be hugely positive, are horrendous when you get there – but there are delightful and authentic small hotels like nowhere else in the world.

Escorted tours for the first time visitor to India seem to always include the Golden Triangle but Delhi and Agra aren’t the most rewarding places to visit. Don’t get me wrong – the Taj Mahal isn’t a letdown at all. It’s just that you have to put the hours in to get there and Agra offers little else. What isn’t so well known, possibly, is that tailor made tours are as cheap as group tours. You can tell me the kinds of things you like to do and what pace you like. I will help you design an itinerary that suits the standard and style that works for you and honestly it won’t cost you any more. Plus you’ll be not just safe but really looked after.

The Rajasthan is a popular area for tourists for good reason. The landscapes are dusty but stunning, the light is special, the lakes, buildings, forts, camel fairs and palaces give the visitor a continual feast for the eyes. You can stay in luxury tents and go on game drives to see tigers in Ranthambore. Udaipur, the lake city, is serene and a few hours away the pink city of Jaipur is frenetic, intense and all that we imagine India to be. And have you heard about the Deogarh Mahal in between those two cities? Well, give me a call and let me tell you about it…..

The Himachal Pradesh is home to the old hill stations such as Shimla with their charming old colonial buildings and railways stations; a short distance from there is Dharamsala where the Tibetan refugee population, including the Dalai Lama, settled. Further south in the Himalayan foothills towns like Rishikesh, part of the old hippy trail, still provide meditation and yoga centres and peaceful retreats beside the Ganges where it’s at its clearest and freshest.

Most of us are familiar with what Goa represents – but actually some parts, especially in the South, are still real India so we shouldn’t assume that all Goa has are noisy bustle tourist traps. It definitely has the best beaches so if that’s what you like and you want to know where to stay that suits your needs we can talk about your options.

In India the unexpected happens – always – but it can be encountered in the safety and comfort of your a/c 4×4 and from beautiful hotels. Good service comes from a genuine desire to please and in India people work so hard to do exactly that.

If you’re unsure and don’t want a travel agent who’s going to say ‘go here, it’s great’ but who will listen to what you like to do and work with you then I’m your person. Don’t worry if you’re just finding out. I put together holidays for a living and not everybody books so my time is never wasted.

Unlimited french champagne

I thought that would grab you!

The Shandrani is on a private peninsula in Mauritius and is the absolute last word in sophisticated All inclusive resorts with its three private beaches, six fine dining restaurants and yes – from 6pm you can have a glass of champagne any time you like! Very unusual in Mauritius where the import taxes on french wines mean they’re tough to find.

It’s not just eating and drinking. There are, naturally, any number of activities included in the plan from sports (golf, cycling, tennis and any number of water sports), to the complimentary massage each guests receives.

The position of the Shandrani means that it never feels crowded. It feels as if it’s on its own little island and there are always parts of the beach or grounds where you can have some seclusion.

Mauritius itself is a beautiful lush island where you can hire a car and explore in safety; you’ll come across waterfalls, lakes and fabulous scenery. Or take a trip to the Pamplemousse botanical gardens and for the more adventurous go zip-wiring or quad-biking. It’s a paradise in the Indian Ocean where there’s a charming hotel to suit every budget and it’s out speciality; our holding company, Sunset Travel, started off arranging holidays to Mauritius and our ties are strong.

I thought we'd just let you know what a wonderful time we all had aboard the Adventure of the Seas, and thank you for your part in the arrangements, we enjoyed every minute, no doubt probably our best cruise to date. Also I would say that disparaging remarks or criticism were totally unfounded, we gave all the staff, food, cabins, entertainment, weather and the ports of call, 10 out of 10, its a great ship, managed by a fine Master and very dedicated crew. We may have to give next year a miss to build up the bank balance, but we will come back to you for your expertise, as our Cruise Connoisseur.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for organising our trip to Verona last weekend. This was a very emotive trip for my wife & I, as it was our first trip to Italy since my wife's cancer diagnosis 2 years ago. Italy is without a doubt our favourite place on the planet and we were not sure if she would see it again. Thanks to you, she has regained, what I call her Italian smile, it came across her face the minute we touched down. Money cannot pay for that smile! The hotel at Gatwick was literally a 2 minute bus ride from the airport, front row seats on the flight over and chauffeur driven limo to meet us at the airport was an amazing start to the weekend. When you said we were staying in a 3 star hotel, I was, if I'm honest, a little nervous, generally speaking, 3 star hotels in Italy means you are sleeping in a cow shed. Not at the Hotel Milano, what an amazing hotel, slap bang in the centre of Verona, with views of the arena, excellent breakfast, towels changed twice daily, good size bedrooms and very comfortable beds! The air con worked superbly, which was just as well with temperatures in the 30's every day. Thank you for making this trip memorable for both of us.

Not only were your clients located in in three corners of the UK, but you had to deal with very late booking alterations, various medical requirements, special dietary requirements and not to mention 6 very experienced cruisers. All arrangements were completed by you with professional calm and flourish and, due to your personal intervention and attention to detail, everything was perfect from beginning to end. For the May bank holiday weekend we asked Jackie if she could find us something in the UK with a hot tub for a relaxing break, Jackie quickly replied with a few options and we ended up booking Conifer Lodges at Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway. The price through Jackie was cheaper than what we could of booked it ourselves. Lastly we have not been long back from Kardemeana in Kos, this one proved a bit more difficult to find as we'd been spoilt in Mexico, Jackie spent a lot of time finding us exactly what we asked for and yet again managed to find us a fantastic hotel at a brilliant price. Hi Olivia, Just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous holiday at El Paso Hotel, It was excellent, the food plentiful and there was a good selection. All geared up for families, with a lovely big pool. Being close to the theme park and water park was the icing on the cake, we even managed to spend one morning on the beach, this was in walking distance. Our private transfer was perfect, no worrying about the childrens seats as they were in our bus. Thank you so much for arranging everything for me and my family, you were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble, you certainly made the whole holiday experience for the eleven of us a complete joy. I will certainly be using you again.

Everything went according to plan thank you.The hotel in Sydney was in a great location, as was the accommodation in Port Douglas, Darwin and Singapore. I have a few ideas for some future adventures so will be in touch for your help.
