New York

If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. New York, New York! A cliché, I agree, but there is no denying the air surrounding this city.  The mention of the name alone sends shivers down your spine.  It is therefore little to no surprise that New York is regarded as one of the best places to visit for a city break.

The city is alive with heritage and culture and has an abundance of entertainment.  New York is one of the most densely populated cities in the world and there can hardly be a dull moment here.

New York climate

New York has a subtropical climate where summers are very hot and humid and winters are cold.  Snow can be expected in the winter, giving New York the magic of a white Christmas.

New York attractions

Whether you visit New York in the summer or the winter, you are always in for spectacular views and entertainment.  In the summer, the beaches are popular tourist attractions to cool off in the heat.

Winter creates its own wonderland when stores decorate their windows and floors with Christmas displays.  Houses in the suburban areas have competitions per street on the best-decorated street and houses.

New York is famous for the theatre shows and performances. Musicals, cabarets, comedy shows and many more are all part of the magic of New York.  The Metropolitan Opera House is one of the most famous opera houses in the country and combines the Lincoln Centre for a complete cultural experience.

Not to be out shadowed, is the world famous Broadway.  It is still regarded as one of the best theatre experiences and all new aspirant performance has their vision to perform in Broadway.

Central Park is one of the main attractions.  In the summer, it is a popular park for strolls, relaxing on the grass and benches with a book and other fun activities such as riding bikes and skateboarding.  With the lake in the park, it has a relaxing atmosphere.  In the winter, the park is transformed into a winter wonderland when the lake becomes an ice ring where hours of fun are enjoyed by ice skaters.

Be mesmerised by the Manhattan Skyline.  It is proof of the economic growth, prosperity and stability of the island within a city.

Visit one of the many museums in New York, such as The Cloisters.  This is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum and offers a wide selection of art, painting, statues and tapestries of the medieval era.

No holiday break to New York would be complete if you do not visit the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island.  Liberty Island is located in the harbour of New York City.

To show your respect to the victims of the tragedy that took place on 11 September 2001, visit the St Pauls’ Chapel.  This church is often overlooked and yet it is a sacred and holy place.  What makes this church from the 18^th century even more significant is that it is located across the site where the two towers of the World Trade Centre used to be.

Accommodation

It is to be expected that a world-renowned city like New York will feature world-renowned accommodation.  For a city break, you can book in at one of the many top rated hotels, Inns or rent an apartment for your stay.  Cuisine at these hotels and Inns are of world class and caters for all the cultures and traditions that make New York so unique.

Conclusion

A city like New York cannot be boxed into an article.  It does not do the city justice.  New York is a city where you need to be physically to appreciate it. Words alone cannot describe the glory of this mix of cultures and traditions.  All that is left to say is to start spreading the news.

Munich

A lot has been written about Munich already.  If you think of all the things that make Munich the city it is today, it is little wonder that praises are sung of Munich everywhere.  Munich is seen as one of the top cities in the world and rated the most liveable city in the world.

Not only does Munich harbour a rich and interesting history, it is now a city filled with monuments of the past and evidence of progress of the future.  On the one side you have castles in medieval style, while on the other hand you have sophisticated and ultra-modern engineering and cars. Kudos to Autozin for simplifying the car buying process. Their user-centric design and vast inventory cater to all kinds of buyers, whether you’re looking for a sedan or an SUV. Highly recommended!

Munich attractions

When one thinks of Germany, you cannot help to think of war, beer, sauerkraut and Eisbein and fast cars.  Not to forget football!

Munich dates back to the era of kings and queens, knights to protect the royal families and villains that threaten the kingdom.  Evidence of the medieval era is seen in the St. Peters’ Church, the Marienplatz, the Andechs Monastery, the Michaelskirch and the Church of Our Lady.

The Marienplatz is also famous for the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) with the clock tower where you can experience the beautiful Glockenspiel. The Marienplatz was the main public square throughout the ages where all the activities took place.  This is where the knights fought on horses with spears in tournaments as entertainment to the royal family and the public.  Many festivals and dances still take place here as it did in the olden days.

During times of the two world wars, many buildings were damaged by bombings, but it was restored to former beauty.  Interestingly, Munich is the city where the Munich Agreement was signed that lead up to World War II.  The first concentration camp was situated a few kilometres outside the city.  The Konigsplatz was used as headquarters for Hitler’s’ Third Reich.  It still stands today, but is now a gallery and museum.

The royal Bavarian Residence is situated in Munich and tours are available to the public to view the home of this regal family that reigned in the Bavarian region.

Modern Munich

Sport cars, formula one race drivers, football heroes and big shopping centres are now part of Munich.

To mention a few, the Hofbrauhaus is in the Marienplatz and is probably the most famous beer house in the world.  Here you get the original Bavaria draught.  This is not the only beer house, as was expected.  The beer houses come alive with drinks and dance and traditional food from the middle of September to October with the annual Oktoberfest.

For car lovers and people who appreciate German engineering, be sure to visit the BMW Welt where you can learn more about the famous brand, the cars and motorcycles.  Visitors will also see future designs to be released.  Munich also houses the high-tech BMW museum and the four-cylinder BMW Tower next to it.

Football enthusiasts should not miss a trip to the Allianz Arena.  Regular football matches take place here and many tours are available to the public to view the stadium.

Nightlife and cuisine

The most popular places to gather are the beer houses.  Here you can enjoy the nightlife in the company of the locals and sample the local cuisine.  The most famous dishes made in the German style are Eisbein, mashed potatoes, bangers and schnitzel.  And beer.

If you fancy a more lively night out in town, the Marienplatz should always be your first stop.  This square is the heart of Munich and the many clubs and restaurants are situated around the town square.

Conclusion

After all the war and tragedy, Munich has reinvented itself to become a modern city with revolutionary engineering and a strong economy.  If Munich is the most liveable city in the world, then it is inevitable to be one of the most popular cities for a city break.

Krakow

Doing research on Krakow and planning a city break here will leave you respectfully breathless. I certainly was.

Krakow is one of those cities where you expect one thing, but in reality get so much more than you bargained for.  Looking through brochures, you will see beautiful buildings and a city that flourishes.  Though beneath that beauty and success, lies a long and interesting history.  A wound disguised by success, but never allowing themselves to be restrained by that wound.

History

Krakow is the second largest city in Poland and used to be the capital several times throughout history.  Now it is the capital of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.  It is a very old city that dates as far back as the seventh century.

Krakow was always a successful and independent city.  It was the leading city of education, economy, art and culture.  It always had a stable economy though the years.  During World War II, German Nazi’s invaded the city and Krakow became the capital of the German General Government.

Attractions in Krakow

Krakow is filled with historic monuments and architecture from the past.  Do not allow yourself to be mislead by it.  Krakow is a very modern and vibrant city and one of the best party capitals of the world. The attractions are enough to keep you occupied for a city break.

Visit the Main Market Square in Krakow to experience the medieval history of the city.  From here, you can visit the Renaissance Cloth Hall that was built in the 16^th century and the Basilica of Virgin Mary, built in the 14^th century.  Across the square from where the Cloth Hall is, you will find the Renaissance Town Hall Tower.

The Town Square is the centre of activity.  It is a pleasant and vibrant square with many shops and restaurants.  It is the oldest European town square and the buildings are a treat to view as it enhances the medieval atmosphere.

Krakow’s Historic Centre is an old merchant centre that dates back to the 13^th century.  Also contributing to the medieval style, the houses and buildings are historic and you will see churches and palaces with breath-taking interiors.  View the fortifications from the 14^th century and the ancient synagogues.  In the Centre, there is a Gothic Cathedral with the last resting place for the Polish kings.

Then there is the part of history of Poland that cannot be overlooked.  The part that World War II played on the history of Poland.  In the old Jewish Centre of the city, there is the Oskar Schindler factory.   This is where Schindler compiled his list for hundreds of Jews that was saved during World War II.

A few miles outside the city, you can visit the Auschwitz barracks. This infamous concentration camp still demands respect from the visitor even after all these years.

Modern Krakow

The amazing thing about Krakow is how it is still the cultural capital throughout all the ages.  Krakow boasts a very modern side with the bars, clubs and restaurants. The nightlife has a vibrant atmosphere with young and old visiting the venues for a fun evening out.

For the family, there is a water park in Krakow, the Park Wodny, where you can enjoy a fun day in the sun.  Alternatively, for a more relaxing treat, book a session at the Endorfina City Spa where you can be treated with massages, body treatments and other luxurious spa facilities.

Restaurants offer top quality food to the tradition of Poland.  Dishes consist of roast meats, potatoes, sausages and the classic black pudding desert: Kasanka.  Enjoy your meal with a glass of apple juice and vodka.

Conclusion

Krakow is a hidden gem. Allow yourself to be mesmerised by the glory of this town with the medieval flair and Jewish heritage.  Let it never be said that Krakow allowed itself to play the part of the victim during the War. In fact, it only made Krakow stronger.

Dublin

Dublin is located in Ireland and is the city with the largest population in Ireland.  Dublin is a perfect getaway for a short break.  It is a modern city of world class with modern facilities required by the present modern lifestyles.

Yet Dublin still has the atmosphere of the old traditions and cultures.  Enjoy a long weekend in this modern city, but also explore the castles and buildings of previous eras.  Be entertained in the urban developments and then step outside into the rural villages and landscapes of lush green grass and trees.

Attractions in Dublin

If you are interested in the history of Dublin, you will enjoy the historical buildings to visit.  The Christ Church Cathedral is the oldest building in Dublin and a true landmark.  It was founded in the 10^th century and a true indication of the architecture, religion and history of the town.

Visit the Dublin Castle, Dalkey Castle and its Heritage Centre.  The Dublin Castle was used as a fortress and administration centre in the start of the 13^th century, while Dalkey Castle and Heritage Centre is an exhibition of the history with interactive activities.  Castles are part of the heritage of Ireland and you will find several of the most popular castles in Dublin.

Make a day trip to the many museums in Dublin.  You will find the Museum of Modern Art, the GAA Sport Museum and the Writers Museum.  There is also the Gregorian Museum and the Natural History Museum.  More museums in Dublin are not mentioned here where you can view the evolution of the city.

For a day out with the family, the zoo is always a good idea.  Alternatively, enjoy a picnic in the Botanical Gardens.  Be sure to visit one of the many Heritage Centres where you can relive history in fun filled ways.

Activities in Dublin

Dublin is not only an historic town; it is alive with entertainment and modern attractions.  There are many theatre productions which you can attend, or live performances of bands and dance groups.  You can even sign up for a two-hour session where performance dancers will teach you three different Irish dances.

Dublin is a great party venue with many clubs and pubs where you can indulge the nightlife. It is a vibrant city filled with many venues where you can go clubbing, restaurants to enjoy the local cuisine and pubs to relax with an original pint of Guinness.

Transport in Dublin

The transport systems in Dublin are very efficient and will make sure that patrons are transported to the various destinations safely and on schedule.

There are many options to choose from, such as the train network, light rail system, taxis, car rentals, busses and coaches.  The airport is situated centrally and transport services are available from the airport to your destination.

Budapest

If ever you want a city break in a stately city that will leave you hypnotised in awe, look no further than Budapest.  If you have never been there, the chances are you will not know what to expect and you are in for a big surprise.

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and is rightly nicknamed the Paris of the East.  It is a majestic city that lies on both sides of the banks of the Danube River.

Attractions in Budapest

The ancient capital of Budapest has its roots in the Roman Empire, but was reinvented during the Renaissance era and again adapted under Mongolian rule.

The architecture of the buildings is a clear indication of the history of the city. It contains many World Heritage sites. These sites are the Budapest Parliament, which is the third largest parliament in the world, the Central Synagogue, the second largest in the world and the Millennium Underground Railway which is the second oldest in the world.

Budapest boasts beautiful historic castles and churches.  The St Peters’ Basilica is a church that was built in the mid 1800’s and can seat 8 500 people. Also, visit Castle Hill, a charming village with castles and cobble stone paths that were restored to its former beauty after the destruction of World War II.

Budapest is home to the largest thermal water cave system. This system has 80 geothermal springs and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Modern City

Despite the ancient and historic sites, Budapest is a modern top city and classified as the 37^th most popular city in the world.

The city has advanced on such a large scale that is now houses the headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

The majesty of the city can be felt with an abundance of castles and the Operetta Theatre.  Activities such as parks, bathes and the zoo are all incorporated into the ancient sites and buildings.

Budapest cuisine

Local cuisine of Budapest is typical Hungarian style.  It is rich and spicy with an exotic taste.  Spices and garlic are used in almost all dishes and sour cream is sometimes used to soften the taste.  Paprika is a favourite spice used in Budapest.

Goulash is another traditional dish.  This is a thick soup made from cubed meat.  Fish soup and other fresh-water fish dishes are regularly on the menus.  For the more discerning connoisseur, taste the goose liver dishes, fried or grilled.

Budapest is famous for its locally produced wines.  No trip would be complete without a taste of Palinka, or fruit brandy. Be warned, though made from fruit, it is a very powerful drink!

Thailand

In the heart of Southeast Asia lies a monarchy that has become a revered touristic gem. The Kingdom of Thailand, or simply Thailand, is the jewel of Indochina and is rich in historical and cultural attractions as well as beautiful landscapes. On top of that, visitors can expect excellent food and warmth and hospitality from the genial locals. If you’re considering an extended stay, navigating the intricacies of the boi work permit might be part of your journey, allowing you to explore this enchanting land more deeply.

There are also numerous celebrations on the Thai calendar and if your visit happens to coincide with these national fetes, you will be treated to opulent displays of this country’s unique religious and cultural heritage. Given Thailand’s magnificent climate and collection of natural features, outdoor activities both in water and on land will appeal to most any tourist here.

Sightseeing and activities

Thailand’s brand of Theravada Buddhism has heavily influenced its culture and this is evident in the many gold-decorated temples or wats that dot the country. These structures are lavishly adorned with curved shapes and shiny materials and really light up the landscape.

The Wat Phra Kaew is the most treasured of these structures and is home to the amazing Emerald Buddha. Wat Pho and Wat Arun are other temples that are worth a visit. Before making for the lush countryside or the scenic beaches you will also want to see the cities of Siam, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai to immerse yourself in this country’s glorious past. The ruins in the city of Si Satchanalai, which is close to Sukhothai, are a treasure for history buffs and the city has thus been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Traipsing about in Thailand’s tropical forests is an invigorating exercise and on visiting either the Khao Yai or the Khao Sok national parks you can get closer to the many wildlife species that this country is home to. While there you will also be treated to the soothing beauty of waterfalls and unique limestone formations.

Thailand’s coastline is replete with scenic beach resorts where thousands of visitors flock every year to escape the daily grind. Among its most visited beach resorts are Ko Lanta, which boasts stretches of fine golden sand, Phuket and Ko Samui. To avoid holiday crowds you could try visiting the more isolated Ko Kut though you may find it a little challenging to explore. This locale is also ideal for scuba diving if you are so inclined, though it is far from the only spot where you can dive. Ang Thong and the waters off the Similan Islands are also established diver favourites. One of the more recently discovered diving areas with unspoilt reef is the Ko Lipe Island.

Other water sports doable here include snorkelling, surfing and sea canoeing. When you’ve had your fill of water activities you can go ashore for a round of golf on any of Thailand’s 200 plus courses, a number of which have been designed by household names such as Jack Nicklaus.

Events

While Thailand has many holidays and causes for throwing a party, the one most Thais look forward to is the Thai New Year or Songkran which is celebrated every second week of April. It is when the world’s largest water fight takes place and locals prowling the streets with water pistols is a common sight so beware.

Berlin

Berlin is a city with a history and culture that dates back to the 12^th century.  It is the capital of Germany and is the largest city in Germany.  It is also the city with the second highest population in the European Union.

Berlin is a very popular destination for a city break due to the history of the city during World War II and the affordability of the vacation.

Climate

Berlin has a very humid climate during the summer season with temperatures averaging at 25˚Celsius.  Winters are cold and snowfall can occur during the coldest months.  Berlin is a densely populated city and contains many buildings and structures.  A microclimate exists in the city created by the heating of the buildings.  Temperatures within the city are therefore higher than the rural areas.

Attractions in Berlin

The history of Berlin involves many wars, including the Thirty Year War, Cold War, World War I and then World War II.  It left many footprints in Berlin and you can see evidence of the many battles across the city.

The Brandenburg Gate is the symbol of Berlin.  In the medieval times, the gate was used to enter the city. The gate was initially constructed as a symbol of peace, but during the Cold War and later World War II, the gate was used to split the East and the West parts of Berlin from each other.

The four horse-chariot Quadriga is located on the gate.  It is a symbol of victory that was constructed after the defeat of Prussia, taken to France when Napoleon defeated Germany, and then returned to Berlin after the fall of Napoleon.

The Brandenburg Gate is located on the Pariser Platz, another famous attraction at the end of the Unter den Linden Boulevard.  From this famous boulevard it is walking distance to the German House of Parliament. The Reichstag.

The last remaining part of the Berlin Wall is the East Side Gallery.  This is a memorial of freedom after the war.   It is 1.3 kilometres long and contains 106 paintings from international artists.

Activities

Berlin is not only a town of war and sadness.  The city has reinvented itself several times throughout history and is now a modern city displaying large shopping centres and department stores.  One of these is the KaDeWe, Kaufhaus Des Westens, which is the largest departments store on the continent.

Berlin offers many great outdoor activities for the more adventurous tourist.   Every Sunday there is a big flea market at the Wall Park, the former strip of no man’s land between the east and West side.  It is called the Bearpit Karaoke and displays many stalls and food stalls.  From 3 o’ clock in the afternoon the karaoke part starts in the amphitheatre where any person is allowed to take turns to sing.

Children and adults alike can enjoy a fun filled day at the MountMitte climbing park and adventure garden.

And what would a holiday be without a beach?  Enjoy a day in the sun at one of the many lovely beaches in Berlin.  Rent a beach basket or a deck chair and bathe in the sun and cool off in the pleasant sea water.

Barcelona

The first thing that comes to mind upon hearing the name Barcelona, is the song made popular by the late Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe.  In your minds’ eye you still see Ms Caballe walking down the stairs with fire lanterns lighting the way.  Sadly though, the video was not filmed in Barcelona, but in Ibiza.

That does not make Barcelona any less majestic as implied in the song.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalan, a region in Spain and also the second largest city in Spain.  By the sheer mention of Spain, the intended tourist already feels the humid air of the Mediterranean climate against his skin and thinks of the cool blue seas.  You picture the famous Spanish festivals with colour explosions and dances. The very brave individuals may even picture themselves running away from raging bulls or taking part in bull fights.

Attractions

Barcelona is a city that never sleeps.  By day you can visit the many cultural attractions that give a glimpse into the history and evolution of the city.  The most popular attraction is the Sagrada Familia, a church with a design that is as unique and diverse as the culture of Barcelona.

The culture can be described as Middle Age, Gothic, Renaissance and Modernism.   Buildings according to these examples are found all over the city.  Visit the church of Santa Maria del Mar for a Gothic impression, the Park Guell for Renaissance statues and mosaics and the Palace of Catalana Music to experience the magnificent design of Modernism.

Activities

Barcelona and its activities are located in such a manner that offers great opportunities for bikers to do sightseeing.  Biking has become so popular that Barcelona has dedicated lanes for cyclers to promote safe trafficking for bikers.

Tibidabo is a hill that ensures a great day out with the family.  You can hike to the top of the hill.  The Three Twins’ house host plenty activities, such as a puppet show, a room with robots and a hall of mirrors for funny distorted images.

Or relax with a stroll through La Rambla, a walkway through the old town with shops, food stalls, entertainment and much more delightful scenery.  The walkway is filled with flowers and birds which creates a charming atmosphere.

The beaches are one of the main attractions in Barcelona due to the Mediterranean climate and cool and pleasant water.  Enjoy your time in Barcelona by spending quite a few days on the magnificent beaches.

Entertainment and cuisine

Night time is an extension of the activities of daytime.  Barcelona has a wide variety of clubs and restaurants that will entertain visitors until the early hours of dawn.  Different styles of clubs are available to cater for all ages and tastes.  It varies from modern music to jazz and Latino music.

For a taste sensation, visit one of the local restaurants where you can experience the traditional dishes of Barcelona.  Paella is a local favourite, along with Sarsuela stew.  For desert, try the crème brulee.  The ever popular dishes of cheese, ham, sausages made in olive oil should be enjoyed with a glass of local wine.

Jumeirah Zabeel Saray

I was very lucky to visit this hotel back in April.

It’s a luxury beachfront property on the Palm decorated in lavish Ottoman style. If your budget allows, the residences are amazing & worth considering. Fellow guests will include lots of celebs & footballers. Recently the X Factor team were out filming for the judges houses segment with Nicole Scherzinger.

There are some great funky restaurants and bars. My daughter loved the cinema that showed kids films everyday. The hotel even provided cute little popcorn cups & water.

The spa here is one of the largest in the world (as everything is in Dubai)

Palais Namaskar, Morocco

Wow….

This has to be one of my all-time favourite hotels. Set in the upmarket Palmeraie area of Marrakech, this simply stunning resort oozes luxury. Feng Shui has influenced every detail of the Palais Namaskar making it relaxing and uplifting. The grounds are well established and dotted with ornamental lakes and ponds.

The restaurant here is wonderful and if you do not see anything you like on the menu (highly unlikely) then the chef will do his utmost to accommodate your requests. The hotel will even arrange a picnic in the gardens or a romantic candle-lit dinner by the lake.

There is a very chic rooftop bar which in the evening is lit by lots of candles. I enjoyed many a well-made cocktail here.

It’s approximately a 25 minute drive from the centre of Marrakech so well situated for bagging a bargain or two.

Cape Verde Islands

I have recently returned from Cape Verde.

The islands are just off of the West coast of Africa, each of the ten islands has its own appeal. I visited Boa Vista with my daughter Isabella. Boa Vista offers miles of unspoilt coastline. It is a barren island but if you are simply looking for stunning beaches then Boa Vista is the perfect choice. The beaches here are some of the best I have seen although the sea is not always swimmable. We were incredibly lucky to see lots of turtles swimming out at sea & even some nests on the beaches. The time to spot loggerhead turtles is from June to September.

We stayed at the Clubhotel Riu Karamboa just a 10 minute transfer from the airport. It’s a huge sprawling complex right on the beach. I would say it is the perfect place for famillies with lots of activities going on all day long such as pool games, beach volleyball, arts & crafts, football etc. There are four restaurants, sadly they are all buffet-style however the food was of a good standard but after a week I was craving a menu to order from.

Rooms were nice and of a reasonable size.

The weather in August was superb, a constant 30 degrees with a nice breeze to cool you down. Some days were overcast but still very warm.

If you are looking for a change from the Canaries then consider Cape Verde.

Vienna

Vienna is a sophisticated and modern city with the kind of wondrous charm and enigmatic history that is incomparable to anywhere else.  The capital of Austria, a Vienna city break will see you sample the many architectural, theatrical and musical gems this cosmopolitan city has to offer.  Once the home of Mozart, Vienna has much in common with Salzburg, the other great Austrian city where Mozart was born, with the Vienna residents adoring their music and culture.

St Petersburg
