Central America

Quite often, the region of Central America is overlooked on the maps but is, in fact, an important part of the North American continent. Many wars have been waged, and fortunes made and lost, of their valuable, natural resources. Fruits, sugar and coffee, have always been the real treasures, but the conquistadors were looking for gold and gems.

I have spent a lot of time in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and hope, one day, to visit the other countries. The attractions range from climbing volcanoes to great surfing, and there is an abundance of lovely beaches for those just looking to chill. I think one of the biggest attractions is the fact that it is very easy to immerse yourself in the local way of life and, by doing so, live very economically for a longer holiday.

For those who are used to the finer things in life, there are high-end hotels and private excursions and guides can be arranged. A lot of travellers may prefer an organised group coach trip, and these can be arranged to suit most budgets by reputable companies based here in the UK.

The first thing that you will need to do is decide what it is you’d like to see and how much time you can spend. While a 2-week trip will give you a very good taste of the region, a full month or more will get you stuck in.

You may want to have a go at some Spanish classes, as well. Antigua, Guatemala is famous for its plentiful Spanish schools, and many attend them to master the language. The huge advantage to learning in Guatemala is that the locals speak more slowly and concisely, so it makes it more pleasant for the beginner to converse. Also, the schools are very flexible and inexpensive, and tuition is, usually, one on one.

Central America is very easy to travel through as local buses and coaches will take you to even the most remote destinations. Don’t be surprised to see any form of farm items, from goats to chickens and huge baskets of fruit, as locals make their way to or from the local markets. These markets are the backbone of rural communities, and practically everyone attends. This is a great place to pick up some deals on whatever trinkets you may want but be aware that negotiation will be necessary.

Adventure is almost a given here, and the opportunities to explore are endless. Visits to local homes and communities are pleasant, but many opt for climbing volcanoes or rustic trips in canoes up the rivers of the Mosquito Coast. The Islands of Honduras are exceptional places to learn to dive as marine life (including whale sharks) is abundant, and the prices are incredibly low. Archaeological sites, also, are plentiful, and great Mayan ruins and World Heritage sites are easily accessible.

Central America is a nature lover’s paradise, and bird watchers will have a field day. Parrots, toucans and sea birds are always on the lists and don’t forget the Quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird and very illusive.

Water sports and beaches are, also, a huge attraction and the region, once again, offers everything from star luxury to a basic hut on the beach..if you opt for the latter then be sure to shake out your shoes before putting them on. Surfing, diving and fishing are very popular, and the waters are warm for swimming, all year round.

The Canaries

Thirteen islands make up this popular archipelago with over 12 million people visiting each year. The main attraction is the warm climate for those wanting some winter sun but the 4 main islands draw tourists all year round. Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the most popular destinations and have an abundance of hotels from pure luxury to the most basic.

While the climate is the major draw, accessibility from most regions of the UK makes a huge contribution to the popularity. Flights are available to all 4 islands almost daily from Gatwick and varying days from other regional airports. The Canaries have a notorious reputation for being budget party locations but there are many high end family resorts as well.

Other than the obvious beach and pool options, the islands offer many opportunities for excursion from quad biking to star watching. In fact, there are 2 major observatories on Tenerife and La Palma perched on high mountains and benefit from the dark night skies.

If you’re after a good value holiday, and an opportunity to flex your Spanish, then these islands may be for you. Please get in touch for further information and, also, I’d be happy to provide brochures if needed…I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Unlimited french champagne

I thought that would grab you!

The Shandrani is on a private peninsula in Mauritius and is the absolute last word in sophisticated All inclusive resorts with its three private beaches, six fine dining restaurants and yes – from 6pm you can have a glass of champagne any time you like! Very unusual in Mauritius where the import taxes on french wines mean they’re tough to find.

It’s not just eating and drinking. There are, naturally, any number of activities included in the plan from sports (golf, cycling, tennis and any number of water sports), to the complimentary massage each guests receives.

The position of the Shandrani means that it never feels crowded. It feels as if it’s on its own little island and there are always parts of the beach or grounds where you can have some seclusion.

Mauritius itself is a beautiful lush island where you can hire a car and explore in safety; you’ll come across waterfalls, lakes and fabulous scenery. Or take a trip to the Pamplemousse botanical gardens and for the more adventurous go zip-wiring or quad-biking. It’s a paradise in the Indian Ocean where there’s a charming hotel to suit every budget and it’s out speciality; our holding company, Sunset Travel, started off arranging holidays to Mauritius and our ties are strong.

Top 5 Holiday Snaps Guest Blog

When travelling there is often one thing you simply cannot leave without. Toothbrushes are available pretty much internationally and for those with not so olive skin, so is sun cream. However unless you are able to take into account the costs of a decent camera abroad, most people won’t jet of without their own. If you are one of those people who love travelling by jet, I recommend you to avail this private jet card offered by Jettly. If you’re heading to Scottsdale, you might also want to consider packing for the stunning resorts in Scottsdale to capture those memorable moments. And when you’re in Bangkok, make sure to capture the stunning moments of your journey with a camera from the Valia Hotel Bangkok.

But how can you possibly tell everyone about all the amazing things you’ve done and seen if you can’t boast with your sun kissed snapshots?

There’s notorious angles of various destinations but many don’t require you to be anywhere specific. So I’ve decided to list my personal top 5 favorite captured moments that I took abroad I think many of you will relate to.

5. Many holidays begin at the airport. Such an exciting place to be for many as it signifies the beginning of freedom even if it is just for a short week, it’s what the past year’s hard graft has been in aid of. Once you’re on the plane and you’ve slept, read and blocked out the screaming baby for as long as possible, there’s nothing left to do but look longingly out of the window and pray that you reach your destination. After what seems like a lifetime you begin to descend and through the wispy white clouds, you see land! So what is the first thing you do? A cheeky snap right? Because how often are you going to be able to get an aerial shot of where you’re going? And how will people possibly believe you actually left the country if you don’t produce evidence of how you got there? It’s important to make sure there is some part of the plane captured or people may think you are in fact floating. See below for a perfect Plane to Land ratio caught on camera aboard a flight to Spain in 2010.

4. You’re a couple of days in now,  you’ve accustomed to the humidity and you’re a slight tinge of red. It’s time to stop sitting on the beach and explore the culture of your surroundings. It’s true, photos of the culture are far more interesting for the folk that are on the receiving end. It is important to capture culture in a way that’s interesting for viewers. Often something that gives a truthful insight of life as a local at your destination. Below you’ll find an image captured during a trip to Israel in 2011 at Acre Market displaying the more relaxed approach of a shop owner.

3. You’ve started to fill up your memory card and for those less prepared that don’t have a second storage space, the process of elimination begins. Perhaps you’ll thank yourself later when you are printing them all and you’re not forking out for accidental pictures of the inside of your pockets. It’s time to get serious, to capture the beautiful scenery that so often is demoted only as a backdrop of holiday albums. Captured below the enormity and sheer beauty of the Dead Sea from The Leonardo Hotel, Ein Gedi, Israel.

2. We’ve reached the all-important number 2 spot, the first loser they say. Certainly rings true here. If there’s not at least one photo of somebody looking seriously hot and bothered in the heat, you’re doing it wrong. I’m going to share with you a moment in which somebody’s holiday took a wrong turn having just finished panting after reaching the top of Masada, a historic mountain deep in the Negev (desert) in Israel, approximately 20 minutes from the Dead Sea. At 9am it was thirty degrees and that soon escalated to a scorching forty. Equipped with the most practical of hats that, as you can imagine, only added to the look. Imagine no further. Let me indulge you in the ‘I just want to go home’ face.

1. Finally the top spot. A picture that features in almost every holiday album that includes sunshine. If you haven’t scrolled ahead and ruined it for yourself, you’ve probably already guessed it. The infamous ‘look what I can hold in the palm of my hand’ pose. Except that the rarity of it actually being perfectly in hands is rather common. See below for one of my favourite attempts. This photo was taken in the summer of 2011 in the city of Jaffa in
Israel.I have also planned to make this photo as custom photo puzzle to freeze such beautiful memories.

Statue of Liberty New York

New York Guest Blog

My New York Experience by Sophie Guest

On my first trip to New York, I was unsure what to expect. From seeing it in all the big films it was always somewhere I always dreamt of going but never thought I would actually get there. I expected it to be a slightly surreal experience, and I was not disappointed as my time out in the city that literally never sleeps, was better than I could have ever imagined.

The first time stepping out onto Broadway and seeing the iconic New York taxis lined up down the street, I instantly felt like I was on a film set. On the first day we sailed down the Hudson River, this is a great chance to get a view of the Manhattan Skyline whilst also sailing past the Statue of Liberty and spotting many other of New Yorks famous landmarks. This river cruise is a great chance to get some iconic New York snaps to show everyone back home.

In the afternoon we took a bus tour around Uptown Manhattan, which dropped us of at the famous Central Park. When you first arrive at the park you are greeted by people trying to sell you bicycle hire or to view the park by horse and carriage, which did get pretty intense and annoying, but once you’ve got past them, the views that await you are magical and you see stunning views of a park you’ve only ever dreamt about before. My visit was toward the end of summer, and still with high temperatures, central park looked as picturesque as I imagined. From the park you can see the Plaza Hotel, renowned for being used in many films, including Home Alone 2, a film I’ve watched almost every year whilst growing up.

On the second day we visited the 9/11 memorial. It was a complete different experience from the rest of my time in New York, but something that I would recommend everyone to do. New York never stops, the noise and adrenaline fills the avenues but a ground zero, its almost silent as people pay respect to the victims.

Later that day we went up to Rockefeller building, it was between this and the Empire State building. I would recommend anyone to go up ‘The Rock’ when in NYC, as you get the Empire State in all your photographs you take as you look down over the city. From here you also get stunning views of Central Park. When I return to New York, I plan to go back up the Rockefeller at night, so I can see the magical city lit up.

On returning from New York, every time I see it on TV I look out for the places I have been and reminisce what we got up to with my family. It is such a magical city and I cannot wait to return soon!

Beautiful 5* St Regis Mauritius

Considered one of the most stunning resort in Mauritius, in one of the most stunning location called Le Morne, in the south west corner of Mauritius lies the sexy, sleek, clean St Regis resort.   Everything is so beautifully thought, the hotel cries pure luxury and is the place to die for.  This is the place where you will be happy on honeymoon, happy on holiday and is very special.  You will never forget St Regis Mauritius.

The rooms have seaviews, they are spotlessly clean, elegant and are incredibly spacious starting at 73 sq mt for a Deluxe oceanview room.  Suites have full direct oceanview giving access to a private deck. The hotel is low rise, which I love as it gives me the feeling of space and elegance.

The staffs are very nice, very passionate about their jobs.  This hotel is highly recommended by many people and is one of my favourite hotels.

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for organising our trip to Verona last weekend. This was a very emotive trip for my wife & I, as it was our first trip to Italy since my wife's cancer diagnosis 2 years ago. Italy is without a doubt our favourite place on the planet and we were not sure if she would see it again. Thanks to you, she has regained, what I call her Italian smile, it came across her face the minute we touched down. Money cannot pay for that smile! The hotel at Gatwick was literally a 2 minute bus ride from the airport, front row seats on the flight over and chauffeur driven limo to meet us at the airport was an amazing start to the weekend. When you said we were staying in a 3 star hotel, I was, if I'm honest, a little nervous, generally speaking, 3 star hotels in Italy means you are sleeping in a cow shed. Not at the Hotel Milano, what an amazing hotel, slap bang in the centre of Verona, with views of the arena, excellent breakfast, towels changed twice daily, good size bedrooms and very comfortable beds! The air con worked superbly, which was just as well with temperatures in the 30's every day. Thank you for making this trip memorable for both of us.

Not only were your clients located in in three corners of the UK, but you had to deal with very late booking alterations, various medical requirements, special dietary requirements and not to mention 6 very experienced cruisers. All arrangements were completed by you with professional calm and flourish and, due to your personal intervention and attention to detail, everything was perfect from beginning to end. All went well with the ship, again thank you for picking it for us; a perfect choice. Staff were great, cabin very comfortable and what was so nice is that there was no forced seating. We could eat in a choice of restaurants and there was always a table for two if we wanted it. The food choices were outstanding. The itinerary was very interesting particularly Kotor in Montenegro. DREAMS LA ROMANA | Dominican Republic | Reviewed 12 Sep 2015
HiJenny,Thank–you for organising our trip to Dominican Republic everything was brilliant and went really well,as expected when you are organising things, the resort was brilliant much better than we had imagined and we were upgraded to fantastic rooms 7303 and 7304 they were the most recently refurbished and also used for the preferred club.I know its early but sometimes its best to try and sort things early so for next August we are thinking of Dreams St Thomas ? but do not think we can fly there direct from UK so were thinking of 3 nights New York, 12-14 nights at Dreams and then fly back direct if available or via Miami with 2 nights there.Or another thought is Aruba I know the Dreams there does not open till 2018 but I think there are similar chain there. Please could you look at these for August 2016.Thanks again for yet another great holiday this year, how do you manage to ALWAYS get our holidays so spot on ?

Myself and Harry would just like to say a HUGE thank you for helping us arrange our holiday. It was the most amazing holiday, Tucepi is the most beautiful place. Our room was lovely, a great view right out to the Marina and the beach, and Villa Marija was the perfect location. Thank you again, will definitely be returning, and also will be contacting you again for future holidays!

Not long back from our 3rd holiday of the year all booked by Jackie, Jackie is excellent at finding great hotels at fantastic prices. firstly we booked a holiday in Mexico at the Occidental Grand Excaret on the Riviera Maya. For the May bank holiday weekend we asked Jackie if she could find us something in the UK with a hot tub for a relaxing break, Jackie quickly replied with a few options and we ended up booking Conifer Lodges at Newton Stewart in Dumfries and Galloway. The price through Jackie was cheaper than what we could of booked it ourselves. Lastly we have not been long back from Kardemeana in Kos, this one proved a bit more difficult to find as we'd been spoilt in Mexico, Jackie spent a lot of time finding us exactly what we asked for and yet again managed to find us a fantastic hotel at a brilliant price. I look forward to booking next years holiday's with Jackie as I know she'll exceed our expectations for what we want.

I have just come back from a fantastic week in Kos which Jackie booked at very short notice for my daughter and myself. I was a little nervous about travelling alone with my 7 year old for the first time as my husband was working and, to compound matters, I had an injured shoulder. Jackie arranged everything to make the holiday as easy for me as possible. The hotel was lovely and just what we wanted - we had a great break. Before contacting Jackie I had already wasted almost a full day trawling the internet and tying myself up in knots. Jackie did all the research, gave me loads of suggestions and had the whole holiday booked and organised in just a few hours. All I had to do was pack and turn up for the flight. Next time I'm not going to even think about searching online - I'll get straight in touch with Jackie and ask her to sort it out for me! Thanks Jackie! xx

Hi Olivia, Just wanted to let you know that we had a fabulous holiday at El Paso Hotel, It was excellent, the food plentiful and there was a good selection. All geared up for families, with a lovely big pool. Being close to the theme park and water park was the icing on the cake, we even managed to spend one morning on the beach, this was in walking distance. Our private transfer was perfect, no worrying about the childrens seats as they were in our bus. Thank you so much for arranging everything for me and my family, you were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble, you certainly made the whole holiday experience for the eleven of us a complete joy. I will certainly be using you again.
