Tobago, truly Caribbean

Tobago tends to be the forgotten destination but has so much to offer to everyone looking for pure relaxation.   It is a very tranquil all year round destination but is an ideal place for families to enjoy.

Tobago offers natural beauty, mountains, trekking, nature walks, snorkelling, scuba diving with live corals, bird twitching with very rare birds, waterfalls, and of course their white sandy beaches.

Various airlines fly to Tobago, BA, Virgin and Monarch. Flight durations will be 10 hrs 40 mins but includes 1 hour touchdown in Antigua.  They also hold the Tobago Carnival sometime in April every year.

These pictures have been taken from Blue Waters Inn, a small intimate super family friendly hotel situated in a secluded bay approx 1.5 hr road transfer from the airport with only 38 beachfront rooms, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom bungalows.  The hotel has only 1 restaurant and 1 bar and nothing is too much trouble for the hotel chef.  He will cater for all clients eating requirements.  The hotel does not offer any motorised sports and prides themselves in total tranquility for clients. They however have a stingray which comes for feed everyday and is a place where you will see the rarest species of birds.

Sol Cayo Guillermo is set on a wonderful sandy beach offering true Caribbean flavour. It boasts a very high standard of accommodation and is a Cuban favourite. Its an ideal locatoin for couples and families and is known for its great service. It is only 1km away from magnificent coral reef.

Facilities on offer at the All Inclusive Sol Cayo Giullermo are two swimming pools, sun terrace with sun loungers and parasols, sports include snorkelling, windsurfing, catamaran, kayak, beach volleyball, Internet café, Main buffet restaurant, International à la carte restaurant. The hotel also has a full day and night time entertainment programme.

It also has four bars including beach bar, Cuban bar, snack bar and disco bar.

The hotel has 264 rooms distributed in one and two storey bungalows, all have a balcony or terrace and decorated in true Cuban style.

The fabulous Independence of the Seas is an amazing floating hotel. Having just undergone some revitalising it is now more amazing than ever. There is something for everyone whether you are a toddler or young at heart. Why not try surfing on the Flowrider ? Or soak up the sun in the above sea level whirlpools. Or take a splash in the on board water park. Or even have a skate on the ice rink. After a hard day around the pool you can then settle down to the wonderful Las Vegas style shows. There are so many shops and cafes on the Royal Promenade that you might not ever want to leave the ship.

With an impressive 3600 passenger capacity and 160,000 tonnage,  makes her the largest ship to ever have been based in the UK.

Dining is a plenty onboard from the three main buffet restaurants to the speciality and A la Carte dining.  With lots of choice of cafes and bars on the Royal Promenade.

San Diego is one of my favourite places and has a fantastic year round climate.  Winters in Southern California are cool at the worst which makes it a go-anytime destination.  Those in search of some winter sun might well consider this destination although the flight is considerably longer than Dubai or Sharm.

Getting there

British Airways flies direct to San Diego on a daily basis but if you prefer to fly with another airline, you’ll need to make a change in Los Angeles.  Taking a flight into LA and driving to San Diego may be an option as the flights may be cheaper, strictly due to frequency…there are as many as 10 direct flights per day from Heathrow to LAX.  The drive to San Diego is about 2 1/2 hours and is quicker and more cost effective than taking the connecting flight.

Getting around

While a car is ideal, the public transit system will get you just about anywhere but If you wish to venture further abroad then the car will be a necessity and, quite honestly, will make your trip more enjoyable.  Driving is the norm in California and the roads, while they seem intimidating, are easy to negotiate and are well marked.  A lot of travellers will use San Diego as their base and take day trips to Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Mexico (Tijuana is just a few miles down the road).  If you do choose to venture into Mexico, you can park the car at San Isidro and walk across to Tijuana or the more adventurous may consider a day trip to Ensenada.  Please, check your rental car’s insurance as many car companies won’t cover a trip across the border…give me a ring to discuss the pros and cons.

What to do

San Diego has so much to see that it’s worth spending more than just a couple of nights.  Shamu, the killer whale, is a big attraction and all the rest of Seaworld is fantastic as well and deserves an entire day to appreciate it.  The San Diego zoo is one of the world’s best and one of the few places you can see giant pandas…this is truly a day out for all ages. Laguna Beach is just a short drive up the coast where the main attraction is the art galleries and amazing craft displays.  

The dining options are incredible, as well, and some may like to spend a night here at the Surf ‘n Sand hotel…it’s built right on the beach.  As I mentioned, before, Tijuana is right across the border and while it isn’t the ‘real Mexico’ it’s worth a trip to shop for trinkets, eat some tacos, and maybe wash it down with a cerveza or a licuado.  One of the best things about San Diego is the beaches; numerous and clean, it’s a sunbather’s paradise

Where to stay

The hotel options in San Diego are very diverse and your choice will depend on what you want to do.  Those whom don’t wish to drive will probably opt for downtown which will give full access to shopping and public transit while the drivers should consider something in the area of hotel circle at the north end. 

This location will give easy access to the freeway (I5) and enable you to get off and going without too many twists and turns.  Coronado Island is the third option and while it’s easy to get out and about (with a car), it’s more laid back and is the ideal location for those looking for more activities such as tennis and surfing.

Too many beaches to count

Mexico holds a permanent place in my heart for so many reasons and it is a country that everyone should experience. The people and their cultures are as diverse as the country’s landscape and all areas have something unique to share. If it’s a beautiful beach you’re looking for, there are so many that you’ll be spoiled for choice as Mexico has over nine thousand kilometres of coastline and more than seven thousand of that on the Pacific side.

The Pacific coast

The Pacific is also host to one of the world’s best surf locations at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido and plays host to annual competitions that just make you gape at the size of the waves. Puerto Escondido has other beaches of a calmer nature for those that might want to body surf or just have a splash around and travelling up the coast to Acapulco or Puerto Vallarta will give up even calmer waters. This area has long been a favourite for sun seekers and is very popular with Canadians and Americans during the winter season as it’s relatively easy for them to get there.

Baja California

Baja California is another Mexican classic which stretches over a thousand miles south of the US border and forms the Western coast of the Sea of Cortez. Baja is a wonderful experience and the contrast, as you look around while on a beach, between desert and water is amazing. If you travel to Baja California, the most popular destinations will be Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos but it’s worth a trip up the coast to Los Barriles for some great snorkelling or to Todas Los Santos to have a beer in the original Hotel California.

The Caribbean side

The Cancun area, on Eastern Coast of Mexico, is the most popular destination for Europeans as there are numerous direct flights on a daily basis. There is a hotel to suit every budget and the standards vary from dingy and dirty to opulent 5 star luxury. One of the big draws to Cancun is the night life; the bars are open all night long and the drinks are cheap so if you want relaxation you’ll be better off in Tulum or Playa Del Carmen. Another draw to ‘Riviera Maya’ is the proximity of ruins; Tulum and Chichen Itza are both fantastic opportunities that shouldn’t be missed. The more adventurous may be interested in one or two day trips to Belize, Guatemala, Mexico city or even charter a boat to Roatan or Utila to dive with whale sharks.

Originally named Ville-Marie, Montreal was at some point in time Canada’s commercial capital. Though it was overtaken by some of the country’s other cities during the 80s and 90s, the city has impressively rebounded to become Canada’s cultural capital. It is home to no less than 50 national historic sites, evidence of its former position in the driving seat of Canada’s economy. But despite the numerous modern skyscrapers it boasts, Montreal is not your typical concrete jungle.

It is home to several beautiful, green spaces where locals and visitors alike relax in the bosom of nature. Being the scene of a unique fusion of cultures and languages, it’s no surprise that the city is home to a large number of international cultural events and has been prolific in producing talented musicians, artists and dancers. There is plenty to do in the way of sporting activities here as well.

Sightseeing and activities

Old Montreal is one of its most poignant attractions. This picturesque part of the city boasts a marvellous view over the Saint Lawrence River from the old port. It also has a number of eye-catching features such as the Clock Tower, the Labyrinth and the well-known Cirque du Soleil.

Its cobblestone streets and ancient French restaurants are also a wonder to behold. A unique way of surveying the wonders of this section of Montreal is to take a 1 hour horse-drawn carriage ride from Place d’Armes. Guided walking tours are also available.

You want to visit this area during summer if only to listen to the army of street musicians or sip a coffee on the pavements of Place Jacques-Cartier. Also of interest is the Notre Dame Basilica, where tourists who attend the service are treated to sumptuous organ music.

Its Victorian Gothic architecture is a sight for sore eyes.

Away from Vieux Montreal, visitors with an eye for a bargain or want to pick up something from a mall should head to Le Plateau or Downtown Montreal. And even when the weather is less than amiable, shopping can go on thanks to the 30km of underground malls and arcades. Formula One lovers will want to make a pilgrimage to the Gilles Villeneuve racing circuit while on holiday to Montreal. Those looking for sandy beaches in which to relax can visit the artificial beach and pool at the Parc Jean-Drapeau.

Though visitors can catch a thrilling movie, riveting play or musical performance at the Rialto Theatre along the avenue du Parc, the building itself is a feast for the eyes. It is actually one of the city’s most notable constructions.

In terms of activities, winter visitors to Montreal will be far from disappointed with the options available. Starting with free ice skating on frozen public ponds in Parc Mont Royal and including cross country skiing, holidaymakers will have no excuse for remaining indoors. During the warmer climes water sports are available with kayaking and the newly-invented river surfing being among the favourites.

Events

While on holiday to Montreal visitors can get the chance to sit under some of the world’s top performing artists during the Montreal International Jazz festival. This spectacle is held every summer between the end of June and the beginning of July.

New Zealand is a country of contrasts. It stretches as far as your imagination, with deserts and lakes, glaciers and volcanoes, forests and beaches. The breathtaking beauty and sheer vastness it holds, reminds the visitor of storybook scenes possibilities and reminds us that even in nature all things are truly possible.

Holiday activities

Australia has festivals throughout the year to suit all visitors. It is a great producer of wine, and one can be on the outlook for wine testing or wine festivals. Sport, especially rugby, is a gathering not to be missed. The seven-rugby event is quite big here every year.

Surf carnivals occur throughout the summer season along the coast. If you are an ardent surfer, you might want to participate.

The Mount House rodeo might not be something where you can participate, but it is great fun for the spectators and participants alike. Another quaint and likely one of the most famous of the Australian festivals is Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. People turn out in masses, and broadcast on television for the world to enjoy.

Conclusion

Australia is economically one of the stronger countries that are very dependent on their natural recourses. Care has to be taken however not to diminish this. The people are generally compassionate, tolerant and a non-violent society. They enjoy a good standard of living and a high standard of education.

The Republic of Zambia derived its name from the majestic Zambezi River running through the country. Formerly known as Northern Rhodesia as it lies to the north of Zimbabwe (previously Rhodesia), it was renamed to Zambia after it gained independence from Britain in 1964.

Zambia borders to eight other countries and is a landlocked country. The bordering countries are Tanzania, Angola, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The climate of Zambia is tropical with a rainy season from October to April and a dry season. The altitude of Zambia creates a more pleasant tropical climate than the surrounding countries.

The climate makes Zambia a green and lush country. The dry season brings hot and dusty winds and veld fires may occur due to the warm sun and wind.

Tourist attractions

The natural beauty of Zambia remains its biggest tourist attraction. Zambia has easy access to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. This glorious falls is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.

The mist from the falls creates the ideal moisture to sustain the rainforest surrounding the falls and expanding over the Zambian border.

Visitors can also access the industrial marvel of the world, the Kariba Dam, which is the worlds’ largest man-made lake.Located in the Zambezi River, tourists can enjoy rafting and extreme aquatic sports in the river. It is advised to join a tour group with experienced guides when tempting the mighty Zambezi.

Lake Tanganyika is a natural lake that is one of the oldest and deepest lakes and offers a multitude of indigenous tropical fish to view while diving. Zambia is a paradise filled with many other lakes and has 17 other waterfalls which are worth seeing and taking a daytrip to the remote areas where it is located.

Zambia is home to Southern Africa’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary. These loveable and intelligent mammals are in danger of becoming extinct if not regulated by law. The sanctuary is a terrific place where chimps can enjoy protection in their natural environment to ensure their preservation for generations to come.

Historical attractions

Zambia has a rich culture and history and historic sites to honour their heritage. These sites depict the cultures of the tribes present in the country dating back hundreds of years.

Many of these villages are still present in Zambia and inhabited by the local tribes. Join a tour group to explore these villages and experience how the locals live.

Another treasure of Zambia is the abundance of caves found here. The caves feature limestone formations and are a treasure cove of rock paintings from previous settlements.
Many monuments and memorial sites were constructed to honour Queen Victoria while Zambia was under British reign. The memory of David Livingstone, the founder of many of these African regions, and the first white man to set foot in Zimbabwe, is honoured through monuments and memorial farms where he and other settlers resided.

One such place is the Livingstone Memorial that was erected in 1902 to commemorate the place where David Livingstone died. He died in 1873.

Conclusion

The country of Zambia is a country where Mother Nature frolicked through the area with her wand to create the spectacular beauty found in these equatorial African regions. Zambia is another piece of evidence of how nature and civilization can co-exist in harmony to preserve their heritage and legacy.

Senegal is a country that is located in West Africa. It officially became the Republic of Senegal in 1960 after becoming independent from France. Though independent, Senegal still lives with many reminders from their French existence, such as French being one of the main languages spoken in Senegal.
