Killington

Killington

Almost three-quarters of a million people visit the popular resort of Killington each year for a skiing holiday.  This resort is the biggest ski resort east of the Mississippi River and is known as the Beast of the East.

This resort has seen many improvements over recent years, no less than the new Skye Peak Express, a lift that call take you from the bottom of the mountain to the top in around five minutes.

The ski trails have also been re-configured and re-thought, meaning less congestion, especially at the intermediate trails.  Another recent addition is the Stash, a freestyle riding experience designed by Jake Burton Carpenter, the founder of Burton Snowboards.  It’s an all-natural trail that’s half a mile in length and features wooded glades, and an enjoyable assortment of banks, slides and lines.

Killington is one of the most popular resorts in the States, and even with nearly two hundred trails can get very crowded, especially at weekends, resulting in long lift lines and congestion on the trails.  However, there’s no place in the East that can match Killington’s variety and range of options.  The owners work hard to keep the place in excellent shape, and there are several base lodges, numerous parking lots and thirty lifts to get you to the trail that takes your interest.

The ski-season at Killington runs from mid-November until mid-April.  For those who like an early-morning start, head for the Bunny Buster or the Rams Heads area.  You can get a clear run at these trails if you arrive early enough, before they get crowded.

Later in the day head for the Bear Mountain, where it is warmer and less crowded.  The trails there are not for the inexperienced though.  If you’re an accomplished skier, take your turn on the Wild Fire or – if you want to show off your expertise – the Outer Limits which is the longest and steepest run in the East.

If you’ve children, Killington can be the ideal place to introduce them to skiing.  You can find training courses and complete holiday packages for children as young as two, although the more serious stuff is meant for four years old and up.  Make certain you phone the resort and book your lessons beforehand.

Once you’re done slipping and shimmying down the mountain, there’s plenty to occupy you in town.  The three-mile access road from Route 4 to the mountain is full of restaurants, hotels and shops.  The place buzzes as soon as the sun comes up and rocks well after the sun has gone down.  This road was once a place for beer, pizza and any rough spot to lay your tired head.  Now it has sushi bars, designer shops and some top-notch accommodation options.  You’re bound to find a place to stay and places to eat that will easily fit your desires and your budget.

Killington really deserves and earns its place as one of the most-loved ski-resorts in the United States.  Book your ski-holiday to Killington today to discover why for yourself.
